Orange cones will be going up Tuesday along a 7.2-mile stretch of Southern Boulevard in the western communities.

A $33 million Florida Department of Transportation project that is expected to take three years to complete will widen the existing roadway from four to six lanes from west of Lion Country Safari Road to the intersection of Forest Hill and Crestwood boulevards.

Crews also will add a 12-foot shared-use path, bike lanes, paved shoulders, new drainage, signs, pavement markings and lighting, according to the FDOT. Work will be performed by Community Asphalt Corp.

The 7.2-mile stretch of road runs through Royal Palm Beach, Wellington and Loxahatchee Groves.

The project was needed because of the significant amount of new development in the area and a corresponding population increase, FDOT spokesperson Angel Streeter Gardner said.

“The purpose of the project is to provide additional capacity to meet current and future traffic demands along the project corridor,” Gardner said. “This will enhance safety and mobility and improve emergency access and hurricane evacuation response times along the corridor.”

The FDOT does not expect any lane closures as construction gets underway, Gardner added.

The project is one of several planned for Southern over the next few years, with each designed to improve commutes along the increasingly busy road.

A second project, slated to get underway next year, will add a third westbound left-turn lane from Southern onto Forest Hill Boulevard and a continuous northbound-to-eastbound right-turn lane from Forest Hill onto Southern; widen the bridge over the C-51 canal; and add new bike lanes on both roads.

A third project will add an eastbound right-turn lane and a second westbound left-turn lane at Southern’s intersection with Sansbury’s Way.

The FDOT is leading the projects, with input and some funding from the county.

It held an open house in Mayto give residents an opportunity to learn more about the Southern Boulevard widening project.
