Bess Wall Trail Horse Obstacle Clinics--April 2-3, 2011 -  Two-day trail horse desensitizing and despooking obstacle clinic at Martin Downs Equestrian Center's huge Covered Arena. APRIL 2-3, 2011; Time: 9-4 daily; 20 participants only so sign up. I'm returning to this fabulous facility because it offers clinicians and participants the perfect venue for any type of clinic that can use a big COVERED arena, nice stalls, elec/water for overnight stays, open arena for riding, plenty of parking, and wonderful people managing and running the facility. JOIN US. Cost: $135; AUDITORS are FREE (Bring your own food, snacks, beverages (lots of water). Restaurants close by (which is what we do for breakfast and dinner). Camping offers electric and water. Motels nearby. Nice big stalls $50 for the weekend (Fri-Sat nights). The stalls are reasonably bedded and cleaned once a day. Each stall has an auto-waterer and stall guards. Participants are responsible for their animals not damaging the stalls and so stalls need to be checked out before participants leave. Motels nearby for those who don't want to stay in trailers or don't have LQ trailers. Grounds fee for those tying out to your trailers (not renting stalls) is $15 (horses dig holes and make a mess of the grass). Horses, mules, donkeys of any age as long as they are halter broke, lead, and have basic ground training. STALLIONS allowed but must have yellow ribbon in forelock and in tail (owner provides ribbons). KICKING animals must have a RED ribbon in tail (owner provides ribbon). TWO animals allowed but only one at a time allowed in the arena. This will allow you to make full use of the two days if you have youngsters and won't be riding. ALSO, any breed or discipline welcome. HELMETS required for ALL participants. No exception. They must be worn whether working on the ground or in the saddle. Leg wraps are handy to protect horses legs when navigating the bigger obstacles. All obstacles are used at the discretion of the owner/handler. If you don't want to do something, don't. There will be more than enough obstacles for participants to do and still eliminate ones they don't feel ready to navigate. Caroline Roffman and Edel Ots Dressage - Fresh off their success at the 2011 Collecting Gaits Farm/USEF Festival of Champions in which both riders rode away as winners, Young Adult Brentina Champion Caroline Roffman and U.S. Pan Am Games alternate Endel Ots have joined forces to open a new training and sales center in Wellington. Roffman and Ots will combine their dressage talent and skills to create a top training and sales center in Wellington, Florida. Roffman and Ots both ride with Danish Olympian Lars Petersen, and despite the fact that they are both under the age of 26 they have proven their star power and talent in the dressage world. “We both love working with young horses and also showing seasoned FEI horses,” Ots said. Ots, who is originally from Wisconsin, rides Toscano, a KWPN gelding owned by Kristin and Steve Cooper. Ots, 25, says he is thrilled to have the ride on Toscano and was named as an alternate for the U.S. Dressage team headed to the Pan Am Games. Roffman, 23, has dominated the dressage world for many years, not only as a Young Rider but also as a professional. Within the past two years she has not only won the Brentina Cup, but won the 2010 Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championship on her horse Bon Chance and then went on to win three Reserve Championships in 2011 at the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championships aboard San City, Bon Chance and Pie. Florida TRAC - Florida Thoroughbred Retirement & Adoptive Care Program - OUR COMMITMENT - In April 2009, recognizing the need for a South Florida based Thoroughbred retirement program, a group of committed volunteers began a retirement and placement program dedicated specifically to horses that competed at either Calder Race Course or Gulfstream Park during their racing careers. Spearheaded by the Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (FHBPA), Calder Race Course, Gulfstream Park and professional jockeys, a program was created for the sole purpose of finding adoptive “forever” homes for retired Thoroughbreds. The group has since evolved into Florida TRAC (Thoroughbred Retirement & Adoptive Care). Since its inception in 2009, over 175 horses have entered the program. Approximately, two-thirds have been placed in adoptive homes. * * * HORSES CAN HAVE MORE THAN ONE PURPOSE - Horses entering the TRAC program receive hands on care, professional retraining, and the chance for a second career. TRAC strives in every way to find suitable adopters for each and every horse. These retired Thoroughbreds go on to success in the show world, on the polo field, in therapeutic riding programs or simply as loving companions. Our adopters are screened and provided with a legal adoption contract. Affordable adoption fees vary per horse. After our horses are placed in adoptive homes, TRAC continues to monitor their progress and care. Preparing our horses for a second career and a renewed sense of love and belonging is the ultimate goal. * * * HOW DO WE MEASURE SUCCESS? - The racing industry continues to support our efforts through purse contributions and annual donations. Palm Beach Hounds, Inc. - The Palm Beach Hounds started in 1979 when Ken and Arle Adams were vacationing in Vermont. While attending a party, they met the Master of the Green Mountain Hunt who mentioned that they were disbanding. Through the course of the evening and many martinis, Arle had several discussions about the hounds. When morning came and heads began to clear…she realized, “they had bought the pack of hounds!” The Palm Beach Hounds registered with the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America (MFHA) in the 1980-81 season. The MFHA officially recognized the Palm Beach Hounds in the 1983-84 season. The hunt is a registered “drag pack” with obedient crossbred foxhounds. Palm Beach Hounds and its members have enjoyed the “thrill of the chase” for many years without harm to quarry. The pack consists of Crossbred Foxhounds that go out twice weekly (Wednesday & Saturdays) in season. The season runs from November through the end of March. We permit visitors, for details please contact the Honorary Hunt Secretary in advance. Our territories are mostly level with open fields, pinewoods, sand banks, and streams. Most jumps are 3’ and 3’3” coops. We welcome and accommodate Hilltoppers (those who choose not to jump). The main focus will be on listening and supporting each member’s personal experiences while establishing a supportive social network. If the group chooses, guest speakers such as sports psychologists, Olympic riders, and top trainers, may be called in. Open to all young equestrians showing at WEF or in their home communities.

We were on a campout and ride with a group that is now the Florida Trail Blazers when some of the members of that group suggested it might be nice to have a place on the Internet to post trail maps. Since I was already involved in doing things with a web server that a friend had set up, so with his assistance I decided to build a web site for trail riders in Florida. We began with a collection of trail maps provided by a member of the Triple B riding club and eventually added more and more maps and information from Florida publications, from various friends and club members as well as my personal visits to various facilities around the state and the neighboring states of Alabama and Georgia. Since that time we have continued to work to improve the design and features of FLAhorse. From the early beginnings, we've been assisted and encouraged by many, many people in the Florida horse community and beyond.
